(occupied) Update:

I was in London back in June catching up with my squatting sources and as I was not surprised to find out that there had been many moves since the Lambeth location.
My source is well experienced with squatting and knows many ways to bend the rules to avoid court. It is really not surprising to find anarchist roots associated with squatting of course alongside many other associations. His network or community as he calls it is actually very homely. We came to visit an abandoned pub near enough to Old Street which was in being used for admirable purposes. The intentions of these people are admirable when it comes to occupying these unused spaces. Obviously it's not really the most viable method, there's a lot aggression towards capitalism here. When it gets to civil court it get's uglier... Protests, police and postponements, ostensive methods which then lure in many kinds of crowds.

I'll update this ramble as soon as I uncover my notes.

(occupied)

(occupied)
As Jonathon Swift once said: “Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.”
(occupied) is a collaborative project that I have been working on in Lambeth North in London with a group of squatters. The ‘squat’ or vacant building is occupied by a group of six men with various backgrounds aged 20-45. No electricity, no heat, no water, no place others would call home. A shared belief is felt by all that dwell inside the dilapidated former pub – to use the unused; to return the building to use and to have an artistic exchange with the public. The squat is a metaphor of absence from society but the occupants that live between the scaffolding see more than just an escapism. (occupied) is recognition and embracement of the everyday, the forgotten and the banal.
